Your Data & Privacy
Lumo StoryTime is for anyone who loves stories. We aim to use your data responsibly and protect your privacy. This app is ad-free, and Lumo does not sell your data to others.
Your Lumo Account
StoryTime is made by Lumo and uses a free Lumo account.
- One Lumo account works across other Lumo apps.
- Lumo accounts use Sign in with Apple so there's no additional password to remember.
- Your Lumo account keeps your Stars safe and ready on any device you sign in on.
- You can delete your Lumo account, and the data tied to it, any time from StoryTime's Settings — you'll have 24 hours to undo this by signing back in.
How Personal Information is Used
When you use Lumo StoryTime, we only use what's needed to make the app work:
- The hero you picked or Magic Camera picture you took to create your story.
- The story you wanted to turn into an audiobook.
- The reader's age, reading level, and language.
- The reader's name and gender, if "Include Me in the Story" is turned on.
- Details you enter to create a custom hero, like appearance, skills, and description.
This information is sent securely to Lumo's servers, to create your story, audiobook, or hero using help from Artificial Intelligence (AI) models from companies like OpenAI, Google, ElevenLabs, and xAI. We minimize what we share with each AI model to protect your privacy.
Lumo's servers keep a copy of stories and audiobooks created by you and others. We use these copies to run the app, fix problems, and remember what's happened in your stories so future ones can build on them — for example, who your hero met or where the last adventure took place.
App Improvement
We collect anonymous details on how you use Lumo StoryTime to make it better for you and others.
This can include things like:
- How often the app is used.
- Which features are used.
- Whether story creation, reading, purchases, and cloud features are working well.
- General details like age band, story language, or story type.
We use Google Analytics for this.
We collect this information when you install the app, but you can turn it off in StoryTime's Settings.
We use a unique but anonymous ID to understand how people use the app over time.
- This anonymous ID is reset once per year.
- If you turn off "Share How You Use StoryTime" and back on again, you will have a new anonymous ID.
How We Make Money
Lumo StoryTime makes money when you buy in-app purchases of Stars or subscribe to Star Pass.
We don't show ads or sell your data to make money.
Stars
Stars are how you pay for things in Lumo StoryTime.
- You are given free Stars to get started.
- You can buy more Stars with real money using In-App Purchase.
- Your Stars are kept safe on Lumo's servers from the first time you open the app.
- Once you sign in, your Stars are linked to your Lumo account so they're ready on any device you sign in on.
Lumo Cloud
Lumo Cloud is included with Star Pass:
- It keeps a backup of your stories, heroes, Magic Camera photos, settings and more.
- If you turn on Lumo Cloud on your other devices, it keeps your Lumo StoryTime in sync between them.
If you turn off Lumo Cloud, StoryTime stops backing up and syncing going forward. Anything saved in Lumo Cloud stays there until you delete it. When you delete a story, audiobook, or hero from Lumo Cloud, it's also removed from all of your devices. Your Lumo Cloud is deleted when you delete your Lumo account — you'll have 24 hours to undo this by signing back in.
Magic Camera
Magic Camera lets you create stories from a photo.
When you use Magic Camera:
- Your photo is sent through Lumo's servers to the AI model so it can inspire the details of your story.
- Those photos are saved in the story they helped create—they are not added to your Photos app.
- A copy of your story and its photo is kept in Lumo Cloud if you use it.
- You can delete a photo any time by deleting the story.
You can turn off Magic Camera in StoryTime's Settings if you prefer not to use it.
How Your Data is Saved
Lumo StoryTime keeps your data in three places:
- On your device: Your stories, heroes, Magic Camera photos, and settings are saved here so the app works offline.
- On Lumo's servers: Your account, Stars, every story or audiobook you create, a record of your purchases.
- Lumo Cloud: Star Pass subscribers can use Lumo Cloud to keep a backup of your stories, heroes, photos, and settings so they're ready on every device you sign in on.
If you have Apple's iCloud Backup turned on, your device's copy of StoryTime — profiles, stories, settings, and Magic Camera photos — is included in your iCloud Backup. Apple manages those backups; you can control or turn them off in iOS Settings → [your name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup.
Data on Lumo's servers and in Lumo Cloud is encrypted in transit and at rest.
You Are In Control
You have control over your data:
- Turn off "Share How You Use StoryTime" in StoryTime's Settings.
- Turn off "Include Me in the Story" in StoryTime's Settings.
- Turn off Lumo Cloud to stop future backups or syncing.
- Delete a story or your hero any time — this removes it from your device and from Lumo Cloud.
- Sign out of your Lumo account from StoryTime's Settings to clear the stories, heroes, and settings on this device.
- Delete your Lumo account, and the data tied to it, from StoryTime's Settings. You'll have 24 hours to undo this by signing back in.
- Lumo's servers keep a copy of every story and audiobook you create. We use these copies to help with support — for example, looking up a story if something unexpected came up. We may also re-use highly rated stories in the future with other readers. These copies are removed when you delete your Lumo account.
We also use a stable device ID on your device to help protect your account, Stars, and cloud features. It's cleared when you delete your Lumo account.
If you'd like a copy of your data, or want a specific story or audiobook removed from Lumo's servers without deleting your account, email us at help@appsbylumo.com.
Parental Consent
When you set up StoryTime, you confirm that you agree to how this app uses data, as described here. If you set up a profile for someone under 13, you also confirm that you are doing so as their parent or legal guardian and consent on their behalf.
Policy Updates
If we make significant changes to this policy, we'll notify you in the app. We save a small record on Lumo's servers of when you accepted and which version of this policy you agreed to, so we can show you any future updates. You can review the most recent version at any time in StoryTime's Settings. By continuing to use Lumo StoryTime, you agree to the latest version of this policy.
